General Packing Tips:

• Be sure your contents are insured! Check your homeowner’s policy. Unless you are positive that you are covered, we strongly recommend a contents protection program such as Tenant One.
• Create an inventory list of all items
• Use sturdy cartons that close. Consider purchasing Professional Quality Packing Supplies. Keep in mind that the small cost of these items is much less than the cost of replacing or repairing your valuable possessions.
• Make sure cartons are firmly packed and do not rattle, bulge outward or bend inward.
• Label boxes and containers on all sides
• Place a cushion of crushed paper in bottom of all boxes, around sides, and on top of items to absorb shock
• Protect large items with moving pads sheets or blankets. We rent commercial quality Moving Pads economically. We offer Plain White Newsprint that won’t smudge or transfer dye to your possessions
• Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes
• DO NOT pack any flammable, toxic or food items

Large Electronics:

• Computers, microwave ovens & stereo systems require special care
• If possible, pack in original cartons and packing materials
• If you no longer have these cartons, you may wish to contact a store selling your item and ask if discarded packing materials are available.
• Otherwise, wrap each item separately in Bubble Wrap or Moving Pads and fasten with tape. We offer easy-to-use Tearable Poly Packing Tape.

Small Appliances:

• Items such as clocks, small radios and other small appliances
• Wrap individually and pack in a carton cushioned with crushed paper
• May be packed in same cartons with linens or lamp bases
• Wrap all cords to prevent scratching items
• Steam irons should be emptied & placed in cushioned bottom of box
• Remove all batteries from small appliances before packing!

Glass Table Tops, Large Mirrors, Paintings, Statues & Large Vases:

• All are easily damaged! Glass may shatter and marble slabs can crack at veins.
• Wrap small items in Bubble Wrap and stand on end in well-cushioned moving boxes. NEVER lay these items flat.
• Larger items should be packed in special Mirror/Picture Boxes
• Paper should never be permitted to touch the surface of an oil painting. Contact Us about custom-made cartons and crates for items of this kind.

China, Crystal & Silver

• Silver should be enclosed completely in clean tissue paper or plastic wrap
• Buy boxes with dividers for glassware
• Wrap each item first with tissue paper, paper towels or tissue paper. Then wrap carefully in plenty of newsprint that has been crushed and flattened out. For maximum protection, use Bubble Wrap. Place items on edge in a well cushioned carton.
• Label these boxes as FRAGILE

Upholstered Furniture & Mattresses

• Upholstered furniture should be protected from dirt and staining by one of two methods:
1. Wrap completely in blankets, sheets or Moving Pads and fasten with tape.
2. OR wrap the way our Professional Packers do using Clear Stretch Wrap. This method is fast and economical. Each roll is a wide 18″ and 1500′ long.
• Mattresses may be wrapped by either of the above methods or boxed in special Mattress Boxes.

Non-Upholstered Furniture

• Protect from scratching and marring by covering with sheets or blankets, adding extra padding at corners.
• OR rent several dozen of our commercial quality Moving Pads. The small cost is far less than the cost of repairing even a single scratch!

Rugs

• Clean first, then roll. If not wrapped from cleaners, wrap in sheets, blankets or Moving Pads
• OR wrap using the same method as upholstered furniture using Clear Stretch Wrap.

Clothing and Linens

• Clothing and linens left on hangers and placed in wardrobe cartons will arrive at destination wrinkle-free. You might want to purchase several of these special wardrobe cartons. One will hold about two feet of compressed clothing on hangers.
• If wardrobe cartons are not used, each garment should be removed from its hanger, folder and placed in a suitcase or carton lined with clean paper. Some lightweight clothing-such as lingerie and sweaters-may be left in bureau drawers.
• If items are going into storage, use cedar chips and/or mothballs to prevent moth damage.

For Moving Day

You might find it helpful to reserve a carton for last-minute items to be packed on moving day. The same carton can serve as an instant aid box for things you might need immediately upon arrival at your new home, such as:

• Soap, toiletries, towels, facial and toilet tissue
• First Aid Kit
• Instant coffee/tea, instant soup mixes, snacks, sugar, powdered milk/creamer
• Light bulbs, screwdriver and hammer
• Small pan or electric coffee pot for heating water
• Paper plates and cups, plastic eating utensils, plastic trash bags
